WHAT WE DON'T FUND

Current grant holders

  • If you are a current grant holder, you may not be eligible to apply again until your current grant period has come to an end. Please check our FAQ section to find out more and contact us if you are not sure about your eligibility.

  • If you have received a grant from The Foundation for three years in a row, we would not award you a new grant for another 12 months after the end of your last grant period. If you are unsure about which application window you should submit a new application in, please email us at grants@jamestudor.org.uk or call us on 0117 9596496 and we will be able to advise you.

  • Even if the exclusions on this page do not apply to your organisation or your project, please note that we are currently not prioritising applications from charities holding reserves that are more than 50% above their reserves target. If in doubt, please contact us to discuss your charity's financial position.

Ineligible organisation types

The Foundation prioritises charities whose primary focus is health related. If your charity delivers a variety of programmes, however, we will consider an application for your health related programme, if you have one.

If your charity does not have health as its sole or primary focus, and it doesn't have a designated health related programme, we may not be able to support you. Please contact us so that we can advise.

If your organisation does have a primary health focus (or a designated health programme), but falls into one of the following categories, we regret that you are not eligible to apply:

  • Organisations that are not registered charities.
  • Charities registered outside the United Kingdom (though we do fund UK registered charities that work internationally).
  • Charities which have been registered for less than two years with the Charity Commission or other relevant body.
  • Charities which have fewer than two years' audited or independently examined accounts downloadable from their Charity Commission record.
  • Charities with an annual income higher than £20 million.
  • Medical research charities that are not members of the Association of Medical Research Charities.
  • Universities and other research institutions.
  • Palliative care organisations delivering services outside the counties listed on this page.

Please also note that we do not accept applications from:

  • Individuals.
  • Researchers. If you are an individual researcher based at a UK university or research institution, we suggest alternative sources of funding here.

Ineligible project types

If your organisation is eligible to apply, but your project falls into one of the following categories, we regret that you are not eligible to apply and we suggest you approach us with a different project:

  • Capital projects (new build or refurbishments).
  • Support for students (PhD studentships, bursaries of any type, including travel bursaries, conference attendance fees, prizes, etc.)
  • Travel / Conference attendance for clinical staff or medical researchers.
  • Art and music therapies.
  • Complementary therapies.
  • Funding that directly replaces statutory funding (e.g., core NHS staff).
  • Projects that have already completed.
  • Sport and leisure activities.
  • Endowment funds.
  • Respite holidays.
  • Experiences (e.g., special holidays / days out, meeting celebrities, etc.)

Other exclusions

  • The Foundation wishes to be as inclusive as possible in its grantmaking to ensure that all the projects it funds can benefit anyone, without discrimination of any kind. To this end, The Foundation will not support projects where potential beneficiaries may be excluded on the basis of the Equality Act protected characteristics (age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation).  Naturally, depending on the applicant organisation's own charitable activities, some projects will focus on particular sections of society. However, The Foundation will not support organisations that are proactively excluding potential beneficiaries on the basis of any of the Equality Act protected characteristics.

  • In addition, The Foundation doesn't take any political position and therefore it will not fund any project specifically aligned to any political party.

  • Please note that we do not accept general appeals sent via email. All applications need to be submitted via our online portal which is accessible once you have completed our Eligibility Checker.

Our funding exclusions apply to all our funding programmes. If you are not eligible to apply for a grant from The James Tudor Foundation, we have provided some information on alternative sources of funding which we hope you will find helpful.

If you would like to discuss the eligibility of your project, please contact us at grants@jamestudor.org.uk / 0117 959 6496.
