Mothers for Mothers

An example of a charity providing disease-specific information, support, and education

Mothers for Mothers is a pioneering perinatal mental health charity that has been transforming the lives of mothers and birthing people affected by depression, anxiety and isolation for over four decades.

Founded in 1981 by a group of women at a Bristol maternity hospital who understood that the most powerful support comes from those who have lived through similar experiences, the organisation has evolved from a simple telephone helpline into a comprehensive support service across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.

Every member of the support team – from volunteers to staff – has lived experience of perinatal mental illness. This means women accessing services are supported by people who truly understand their struggles. More than 18,400 families have been supported by the charity since its founding, with recent years seeing unprecedented demand reflecting both heightened awareness of mental health issues and the closure of services elsewhere.

Mothers for Mothers offers a comprehensive range of services tailored to different needs. The REACH helpline and support calls provide immediate, confidential guidance; weekly peer support groups – available both in person and online – create safe spaces where women can share experiences and build connections; home visiting services reach those unable to leave their homes; and specialist counselling, including art psychotherapy, supports deeper emotional work. The charity also offers targeted support for pregnancy and SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability), ensuring no mother feels alone.

"I didn't feel any love for my son but now I've started feeling again. When he smiles, I smile. I can smile and I can feel it. I can bond with him."

"Especially as a black mother, there wasn't a lot for mental health information and how to navigate using services. There might have been a perception that Mothers for Mothers may not understand a woman of colour, but during my support I felt represented."

In 2024, the charity received the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service – the highest recognition for VCSE organisations. Maria Viner, Chief Executive, reflected on this honour: "Mothers for Mothers are delighted to have been awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service in our 40th year. It is very emotional to think about all the families that they have supported over 40 years. The women and birthing people who we walk alongside on their journey to recovery are the inspiration for all that we do. This honours their bravery."
