St Peter's Hospice

St Peter's Hospice is Bristol's only adult hospice and has been caring for people with an end-of-life diagnosis since 1978.
Today, the hospice serves a population of nearly one million across Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire, providing free, holistic care that addresses physical, emotional, spiritual, and social needs – without prejudice and always with dignity at its heart.
The charity offers a wide breadth of services. Its state-of-the-art Inpatient Unit in Brentry, purpose-built in 2018, features 15 spacious single rooms with large sliding doors opening onto tranquil gardens. It cares for over 260 patients on the unit – an increasing number year on year – supported by a multidisciplinary team including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, psychotherapists, complementary therapists, and social workers. Patients are admitted based on urgency and complexity of need rather than waiting lists, ensuring those most in need receive timely care.
For many patients, however, staying at home is what matters most. The Hospice at Home service provides hands-on nursing care in a patient's own environment during the final weeks of life. On average, the team supports approximately 1,000 patients annually through more than 9,000 visits, enabling more people to fulfil their wish to remain at home while offering vital respite to carers.
The hospice’s reach is wide, and the charity is well known across Bristol and the surrounding area. However, the hospice estimates that they are still only reaching around 1 in 3 people who could benefit from their care. By working with communities, breaking down myths around hospice care, and encouraging people to engage with them earlier after diagnosis, they hope to change this.
