International

International health challenges demand local solutions.

From disability support to maternal care, the charities we have supported have improved healthcare provision through sustained local partnerships, cultural understanding, and community-led interventions.

Between 2005 and 2025, we awarded 264 grants totalling £1.93 million to 97 organisations delivering essential healthcare across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Our funding has enabled comprehensive disability services – from prosthetic limbs and assistive devices to community-based physiotherapy. We have supported maternal and infant health programmes, training midwives and safe motherhood ambassadors.

We have funded mobile health clinics, telemedicine services, eye care, palliative care, and clean water access, whilst backing professional training that builds sustainable healthcare capacity in underserved communities.

We also provided 77 discretionary grants totalling over £200,000 chiefly in response to emergency appeals for humanitarian aid following natural disasters.

Theme: Healthcare provision

Over the past two decades, the Foundation has supported healthcare provision across Africa, Asia, and beyond. Our grants have enabled specialist disease treatment – addressing leprosy, Ebola, meningitis, malaria, and childhood cancer through chemotherapy and antibiotics.

We have backed eye health services, from cataract operations for children to community eye health programmes and vision support for albinism. Mobile health clinics and telemedicine services have extended healthcare access to remote communities. We have funded health education initiatives, school nursing programmes, and youth health services.

Our support has strengthened clinical infrastructure – establishing medical rooms and health clinics, supporting dental health projects that eradicate harmful traditional practices, and funding treatment programmes for burns and acid attack survivors.

Theme: Maternal and infant health

The Foundation has championed maternal and infant health across some of the world's most underserved regions. Our grants have contributed to the training of auxiliary nurse midwives and safe motherhood ambassadors, building sustainable clinical capacity in communities where maternal mortality remains critically high.

We have supported programmes addressing obstetric fistula, improving maternity skills in sub-Saharan Africa, and delivering maternal and child health interventions. These projects have strengthened antenatal care, reduced newborn mortality, and ensured that women receive dignified, skilled support during pregnancy and childbirth.

By investing in frontline healthcare workers and community-based education, the charities we have helped work tirelessly to transform maternal health outcomes in Ethiopia, Nepal, Uganda, DRC, and beyond, reaching mothers and infants who would otherwise lack access to life-saving care.

Theme: Professional education and training

The Foundation has invested in professional education and training, recognising that sustainable healthcare depends on building local expertise. Our grants have funded nursing training, ophthalmic courses, and specialised cardiac training, equipping healthcare professionals with skills to deliver high-quality care in their communities.

We have supported capacity-building initiatives across Africa and Asia, enabling clinicians to work effectively with limited resources. By backing professional development programmes, we have strengthened the healthcare workforce and ensured that knowledge remains embedded within communities, creating lasting improvements in clinical practice and patient outcomes.

Theme: Equipment

The Foundation has helped to provide equipment in healthcare facilities across Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe with essential medical technology and supplies. Our grants have contributed to the cost of hospital equipment, diagnostic tools including hip ultrasound machines, and life-saving devices such as baby warmers and oxygen delivery systems.

We have also supported physical therapy equipment, medical fridges for blood storage, and laboratory supplies that enable clinics to function effectively. By investing in critical infrastructure and equipment, we have helped to strengthen healthcare delivery in remote and under-resourced settings, ensuring that frontline workers have the tools necessary to provide quality care and save lives.

Theme: Sexual and Reproductive Health Education

The Foundation has supported sexual and reproductive health programmes addressing critical gaps in education and disease prevention. Our grants have contributed to HIV and AIDS interventions, peer health education programmes, and sexual health helplines providing accessible support to young people.

We have backed teenage pregnancy prevention projects and antenatal care initiatives that strengthen maternal health outcomes. These programmes combine health education with compassionate service provision, empowering communities to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.

By investing in prevention, education, and treatment, the charities we have supported have helped reduce stigma and improve health outcomes across Africa and beyond.

Theme: Disability

The charities we have supported have enabled people with disabilities to live independently and participate fully in their communities. Our grants have funded assistive devices, adapted seating, and prosthetic limbs, transforming mobility and quality of life.

We have supported community-based physiotherapy and rehabilitation programmes for children with severe disabilities, helping them access education and develop essential skills. Our funding has equipped disabled children with devices needed for school participation and supported equipment repair services.

By investing in practical solutions and therapeutic support, we have helped break down barriers to independence, enabling disabled people across Africa and Asia to achieve their potential.

Theme: Mental Health

The Foundation has recognised the critical importance of mental health support in communities affected by trauma and adversity anywhere in the world. Our grants have supported PTSD counselling programmes for young people, providing vital psychological support where mental health services are scarce.

These interventions address the invisible wounds of conflict, displacement, and hardship, helping young people process trauma and rebuild their lives. By backing accessible mental health services, we have helped to support communities in recognising and responding to psychological need.

The charities we have supported ensure that people of all ages have access to trained counsellors and therapeutic support, enabling healing and resilience in some of the world's most challenging contexts.

What we have learnt and how this funding programme has evolved

During its first 20 years, the Foundation has been humbled by the resilience, ingenuity, and determination of the organisations supported, operating in some of the world's most challenging conditions and with the least access to resources.

The scale of need remains significant and demand has continued to rise across this programme. With such a wide breadth of activity, coupled with the Foundation's limited financial and operational resources, it had become increasingly difficult to meet demand comprehensively.

Following our latest review, we have decided that we will continue to award grants to organisations operating internationally, but on a discretionary basis. Our level of support will remain unchanged, enabling us to back the most strategically aligned interventions and ensure our funding creates meaningful impact where it is most needed.
