About the Multiple System Atrophy Trust

The Multiple System Atrophy Trust (MSA Trust) is the only charity (in the UK and Ireland) dedicated to supporting people affected by multiple system atrophy (MSA) – a rare, complex, and progressive neurological condition. The charity offers expert, evidence-based support and information to individuals living with the condition, their families, carers, and healthcare professionals.

Central to the Trust’s work is the provision of tailored services, including specialist nurse support, telephone and email advice, social welfare guidance, and community support groups. These services are designed to help people navigate the practical and emotional challenges of MSA, such as adapting to changing abilities, accessing appropriate care, and maintaining wellbeing. Creative approaches, such as online forums and educational resources, also help individuals and families to connect, share experiences, and find hope amid uncertainty.

Beyond direct support, the MSA Trust is committed to advancing understanding and treatment of MSA. As the principal funder of MSA research in the UK, it has invested over £3 million in research grants, supporting projects that investigate causes, improve diagnosis, and develop new therapies.

The Trust also plays a vital role in influencing policy and practice, working to ensure that the needs of people with MSA are recognised within healthcare systems.

Why we support The Multiple System Atrophy Trust

The Foundation champions charities that are the leading providers of specialist information and support for people affected by specific diseases or conditions. Our support for the MSA Trust has focused on its key service of nurse-led support, which guides patients every step of the way from diagnosis onward. MSA is a complex, progressive condition, and the Trust’s specialist, professional approach ensures that those affected receive expert and compassionate care from diagnosis onwards.

The MSA Trust is an accredited Trusted Information Creator for patients and those who care for them.

It also invests in medical research to advance diagnosis of MSA and find new treatments. Although The Foundation is no longer involved in funding medical research, we recognise the value of charities that belong to the Association of Medical Research Charities, like the MSA Trust. These organisations maintain rigorous standards in research funding, and their work also helps to drive meaningful improvements in healthcare delivery for those affected right now.
