The Leprosy Mission

Founded in 1874, The Leprosy Mission stands as the world's largest and oldest leprosy-focused organisation, championing the transformation of lives across nearly 30 countries.
With an international workforce of approximately 1,800 staff members, the charity operates from its global headquarters in London, driven by a powerful vision: leprosy defeated, lives transformed.
The organisation's work spans three interconnected priorities that shape everything it does. First, it pursues the elimination of leprosy transmission by partnering with governments, universities and health services to enhance early diagnosis and deliver effective treatment through Multi-Drug Therapy. Simultaneously, The Leprosy Mission tackles the disabling consequences of leprosy through hospitals, community health programmes and disability resource centres, ensuring that affected individuals access specialist care including reconstructive surgery and ongoing support for inner wellbeing. Third, it confronts the profound stigma that accompanies the disease through human rights advocacy, working alongside affected communities to challenge discriminatory laws and practices that undermine dignity and social inclusion.
The Leprosy Mission's impact reflects sustained commitment to measurable change. Operating in some of the world’s poorest countries, the charity maintains a substantial presence within the most leprosy-affected communities globally. Recent achievements demonstrate meaningful progress: in Bangladesh, 745 new leprosy cases were found and cured in a single year, whilst 54 self-help groups were established to prevent disability and empower people to improve their climate resilience. Thanks to a recent project in Nigeria, 1,833 children and young people affected by leprosy and lymphatic filariasis showed measurable improvements in their mental health. The innovative ‘Hubs of Hope’ initiative created 22 solar-powered community hubs which trained 1,703 people in self-care to prevent disability and 3,578 people in climate-resilient agriculture and financial management.
The Leprosy Mission's enduring commitment - rooted in compassion and human dignity - continues to redefine what recovery and restored community life means for some of the world's most marginalised populations.
