Temwa is a dynamic charity that has supported some of the most remote and marginalised communities in northern Malawi.

Since 2003, Temwa’s mission has remained constant: to ensure that people in hard-to-reach areas have the skills and resources to build healthy, resilient, and sustainable futures. Every programme is designed and led in partnership with community members, because lasting change only happens when communities are in the driving seat. Temwa has applied the community-led approach across projects in agriculture, forestry, education and health, ensuring that all projects are mutually reinforcing.

Temwa’s support on health has focused on improving access to water and sanitation to reduce the high incidence of water borne illnesses, and the prevention and treatment of HIV/Aids. Through innovative mobile clinics, Temwa has brought free and confidential HIV counselling and testing, sexual health education, family planning, and SRHR services to over 40,000 people. Temwa has removed barriers that prevent vulnerable populations from learning their HIV status, accessing treatment, and making informed choices about their sexual and reproductive wellbeing.

More recently, Temwa has focused on addressing the vulnerability of young people to SRHR risks, which include gender-based violence, early marriage, unsafe abortions, teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Its new programme has helped establish 22 school-based clubs and 30 Out-of-School clubs, empowering young people to understand their sexual and reproductive health and rights, and to demand better access to health services.

Complementing its work on health, Temwa’s Education Programme has focused on improving literacy and early childhood development through the establishment of 30 community-led pre-schools. Finally, Temwa has a strong focus on supporting forestry and sustainable agriculture, having planted over 1.7 million trees, and supported thousands of farming households gain food security and income through the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and forest-friendly livelihoods.
