Network for Africa

Network for Africa addresses a critical but often overlooked aftermath of conflict: the invisible wounds of trauma. While aid agencies typically focus on physical reconstruction – rebuilding roads, schools, and clinics – Network for Africa (N4A) operates on the conviction that true recovery cannot begin until survivors are mentally equipped to face the future.
Founded on the understanding that untreated post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) paralyses entire communities, N4A provides mental health support in post-conflict zones, including Sierra Leone and northern Uganda. Their approach is to build a sustainable model of delivery: rather than deploying short-term expatriate staff, they identify and train local community leaders, health workers, and survivors to become counsellors. This "train the trainer" approach ensures that mental health expertise remains embedded in the community long after a project concludes, fostering resilience from within.
Nowhere is this work more vital than in Rwanda, where the legacy of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi continues to impact generations. Working in partnership with the Survivors Fund (SURF), N4A delivers critical support to those for whom the genocide is not history, but a daily psychological burden.
The charity’s intervention goes beyond traditional talk therapy; it integrates mental health care with livelihood support. By first stabilising a survivor's mental state, N4A enables them to successfully engage in business training and income-generating activities. The impact is transformative. In their 2024 cohort, the percentage of survivors who felt "limited by trauma" plummeted from 72% to just 8% after receiving support.
I was separated from my mother during the genocide and grew up feeling hopeless and alone. For years, I struggled with trust and thoughts of suicide. But joining the counselling group changed everything. Today, I’m a Peer Support Counsellor, happily married with a family, and finally living with hope and peace.

Since commencing this specific partnership in 2017, N4A and SURF have supported over 2,000 participants in Rwanda alone. Their wider work across the continent has seen former child soldiers in Uganda and Ebola survivors in Sierra Leone return to productive life. By proving that mental health is a prerequisite for economic development – not a luxury – Network for Africa has established a powerful blueprint for humanitarian aid, helping thousands of the world’s most vulnerable people move from barely surviving to truly living.
